Unsung heroes in the service of music

he drone of Tambura is the base upon which Indian classical music is rendered. As the rendition picks up the tempo the other sounds take precedence, relegating the drone to the background.  Yet, it’s the buzzing of the tambura, also called tanpura,  that binds the notes to their respective places.

    

     Like the drone a tambura produces, are the efforts of its makers M Srinivas Rao and C S Anand Rao.  The yeoman service of this father-son duo goes unsung, though it’s an essential part of the music industry.

  

     Based in Hanumanthnagar in Bangalore, the Raos are not only making tamburas but also the much sophisticated stringed instrument the Veena. They are one of a very few makers of stringed classical music instruments in Karnataka.

     Making the veena is a traditional occupation of the Rao family. Srinivas Rao who is into veena making since 1947, migrated to Bangalore from his hometown Chikkahejjaje in Doddaballapur.   “Mine is the fourth generation in this profession of making veenas,” says Anand Rao with a tinge of pride.

      Forty-five year old Anand Rao learnt the nitty-gritty of the craft accompanying his father since his school days.  He is into the trade full time from the last 20 years.

     The veenas and the tamburas made by them have been flown to Germany, France, US, Australia, Singapore and many more countries.  They supply instruments to showrooms too. Though making veena and tambura is their mainstay, they also repair other stringed instruments like mandolin, violin, sitar and guitar.

     The duo has travelled from Jammu and Kashmir to Kanyakumari transporting and servicing the veenas.  “I have gone even to a remotest corner in Assam,” claims Anand.  Attending the customers at their doorstep is the USP of the Raos. Anand is mostly travelling supplying and servicing the veena depending upon the need of the clients.  He stays at cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Vishakhapatnam, Mangalore, Sringeri, Shimoga, Madurai, and Rajahmundry for weeks. 

     Rao senior has participated in World Musical Instruments’ Exhibition in the US.  The veenas have taken him to London and Singapore too.  Recognizing this not so common service to the field of music, the Karnataka Government has honoured Srinivas Rao with the Rajyotsava Award.  Both of them are proud to be associated with well-known artistes and music aficionados.

      Srinivas Rao who is in his mid eighties still makes the musical instruments at their home cum workshop from 8 am to 1 pm every day.  While Anand is busy travelling to places, his father and wife Archana look after the business in Bangalore in his absence.

     Most of the carpentry works are outsourced. With all the required materials ready, it takes two days to make a veena, says Rao junior.  The father and the son together make eight to 10 veenas per month.

     Anand has learnt the basics of the classical music as the knowledge of tuning is very essential while making a veena.  A graduate in arts, he did never think of any other profession.  Today Anand Rao is a contented man and has no regrets.

Is Kejriwal balloon losing air?

attered by corrupt practices and nepotism of those in power, the common man was yearning for an alternate party for long.  Then emerged, as a beckon of hope, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) promising solutions for all the ills plaguing the administration.  People could easily identify themselves with the party and the abbreviation AAP too appeared endearing, respecting the people who have been treated as third rate citizens once they sent their representatives to the Houses. People had every reason to find a messiah in AAP’s founder Arvind Kejriwal.

     But has Kejriwal lived up to the rosy picture he painted? Despite forming the government at Delhi, he abandoned it after one and a half months. Reasons he may attribute many, but he might have dreaded the feasibility of implementing his promises on electricity and water to Delhiites? Buoyed by his success in Delhi Assembly elections, he wants to repeat the same feat in the ensuing Lok Sabha election? But showing his back to the Delhi Government in less than two months is all that he has as his credential. Delhi is a small area where he could personally supervise the campaign, but in the national context, Kejriwal is spreading himself too thin. Hence he is most unlikely to recreate the Delhi magic. At the most AAP could be a spoil sport for other parties which are confident of winning the coming election.

      Kejriwal, an income tax official of IRS cadre, who quit service with the lofty ideal of cleansing the system, followed the Gandhian principle of dharnas along with his mentor Anna Hazare. But dharnas and road shows are staged at the drop of a hat nowadays reducing them to nothing but mockery.  The party, of course, has given a vent to the frustration piled up among the people. Aam aadmis, now have realized their potential, and this new found enthusiasm is prompting them to break the law, niceties and public property as well. Is the party all up to professing this kind of anarchy? The actions of the zealots in Delhi, Mumbai or elsewhere are uncalled for a party which made a humble beginning. 

     The recent developments in the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) appear to be autocratic than democratic. Common man’s influx into to his “own party”, notwithstanding, for every well-known face joining Aam Aadmi Party, another person instrumental in the core committee quits on a daily basis.  Is the environment so stifling?  Is Arvind who promised sky to the common man surrounded by sycophants and opportunists, an allegation once he had faced when was associated with Anna.  Controlling his followers appears to have gone out of his control.  Apart from leading from the front, a leader should be capable of convincing the followers to toe the line.

     Kejriwal is good at exposing the misdeeds and black sheep in the system than cleansing it. Hence he is fit to be in the opposition than the ruling party for, ruling parties should be reined in at times for better governance.

A feat at 79 - Krishnananda Hegde gets Ph D

Dr. Krishnananda Hegde gets Ph.D. from Mangalore University in 2014 for his thesis titled The Influence of Ancient Indian Healing Arts on Modern Medicine.  No mean an achievement at the age of 79.   An article of mine carried in his autobiography Ondu Badukina Kathe has been reproduced as a salute to his rare feat.

’...ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನು ಕೊಟ್ಟಿರುವೆ ಏನ ಬೇಡಲಿ?’

ರ್ಜುನ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಯದ ನಾಗಾಲೋಟದ ಬದುಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಂಚಾಣದ್ದೇ ಝಣ ಝಣ.  ಈ ಧಾವಂತದ ನಡುವೆ ನಮ್ಮೊಳಗಿನ ಧ್ವನಿ ನಮಗೆ ಕೇಳಿಸುವುದೇ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಗುರಿ ಮುಟ್ಟಿದ ಬಳಿಕ ಕ್ರಮಿಸಿದ ದಾರಿಯನ್ನು ಹಿಂದಿರುಗಿ ನೋಡುವಷ್ಟು ಸಮಯವಿಲ್ಲ. ವ್ಯವಧಾನವಂತೂ ಮೊದಲೇ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಏರಿದ ಏಣಿಯನ್ನು ಒದ್ದು ಮೇಲೇರುವ ಜನ ನಾವು. ಹೊಳೆ ದಾಟಿದ ಮೇಲೆ ಅಂಬಿಗನ ಹಂಗೇಕೆ?

ಲೋಕದ ಈ ನೀತಿಗೆ ಅಪವಾದ ಪ್ರೊ. ಕೃಷ್ಣಾನಂದ ಹೆಗ್ದೆಯವರು.  ವೃತ್ತಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಪ್ರವೃತ್ತಿಗಳೆರಡರಲ್ಲೂ ಹೆಗ್ದೆಯವರ ಸಾಧನೆ ಅನನ್ಯ. ಎತ್ತರಕ್ಕೇರಿದಷ್ಟೂ ವಿನೀತ ಭಾವ. ಇತರರ ನೋವು ನಲಿವುಗಳಿಗೆ ಸ್ಪಂದಿಸುವ ಹೃದಯವಂತಿಕೆ

ನನ್ನ ಹಾಗೂ ಹೆಗ್ಡೆಯವರ ಒಡನಾಟ ಸರಿ ಸುಮಾರು ಮೂರು ವರುಷಗಳಷ್ಟು. ಆದರೆ ಅವರಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಆತ್ಮೀಯತೆ ನೂರು ವರುಷದ ಪರಿಚಯದಷ್ಟು. ನಾನು ಮಾರ್ನಿಂಗ್ ನ್ಯೂಸ್ ಸೇರುವ ಮುನ್ನ ಮತ್ತು ಬಳಿಕ ಬೇರೆ ಕಡೆ ದುಡಿದಿದ್ದೇನಾದರೂ, ಕೃಷ್ಣಾನಂದ ಹೆಗ್ಡೆಯವರಲ್ಲಿರುವಷ್ಟು ಆತ್ಮೀಯತೆ ಯಾರಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಕಾಣಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಈ ಪತ್ರಿಕೆ ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಇಂದಿಗೆ ಹದಿಮೂರು ವರ್ಷಗಳಾಗುತ್ತಾ ಬಂದರೂ, ನಮ್ಮ ಸ್ನೇಹವಿನ್ನೂ ಮಾಸಿಲ್ಲ. ಅದೇ ಅಪ್ಯಾಯಮಾನತೆ. ಭೇಟಿಯಾದಾಗಲೆಲ್ಲ ಕಳಕಳಿಯಿಂದ ಕುಶಲ ವಿಚಾರಿಸುವ ಸ್ನೇಹಜೀವಿ. ಅದೊಂದು ವೃತ್ತಿ ಸಂಬಂಧಗಳನ್ನು ಮೀರಿದ ಆತ್ಮೀಯತೆ. ಬದುಕಿನ ಪಯಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಭೇಟಿಯಾಗುವವರು ಬಹಳಷ್ಟು ಮಂದಿ, ಆದರೆ ತಮ್ಮ  ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿತ್ವದ ಛಾಪನ್ನು ಉಳಿಸಿ ಮುಂದೆ ಹೋಗುವವರು ವಿರಳ.

ನಮ್ಮದು ಮಾರ್ನಿಂಗ್ ನ್ಯೂಸ್ ಪತ್ರಿಕೆಯ ಚೊಚ್ಚಲ ತಂಡ. ನನಗೆ ಹೆಗ್ಡೆಯವರ ಸಾಧನೆ, ಮೇರು ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿತ್ವದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಅರಿವಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಅದಾಗಲೇ ಸಾಧನೆಯ ಶಿಖರವನ್ನೇರಿದ್ದ ಹೆಗ್ದೆಯವರು ನಮಗೆ ಇದರ ಸುಳಿವನ್ನೂ ನೀಡಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಅಷ್ಟೊಂದು ವಿನಯ ಮತ್ತು ಸರಳತೆ ಅವರಲ್ಲಿ ಮನೆ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದವು. ಹೆಗ್ಡೆಯವರಂತಹ ತುಂಬಿದ ಕೊಡ ತುಳುಕುವುದಾದರೂ ಹೇಗೆ?  ಅವರೊಂದಿಗೆ ವೃತ್ತಿಯಲ್ಲ್ಲಿ ತೊಡಗಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾ ಬಂದಂತೆ ಅವರ ಒಂದೊಂದೇ ಪಾಂಡಿತ್ಯ, ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿತ್ವಗಳು ಅನಾವರಣಗೊಳ್ಳತೊಡಗಿದವು. ವಯಸ್ಸು, ಜ್ಞಾನ,  ಅನುಭವ ಎಲ್ಲದರಲ್ಲೂ ಹಿರಿಯರಾಗಿದ್ದ ಹೆಗ್ಡೆಯವರು ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಸಮಾನರಂತೆ ನಡೆಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ರೀತಿ ಅವರ ಸಹೃದಯತೆಗೆ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿ.

ಪತ್ರಿಕೋದ್ಯಮದ ಶೈಕ್ಷಣಿಕ ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆ ಮತ್ತು ಕಿರು ಅವಧಿಯ ವೃತ್ತಿ ಅನುಭವಗಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ನಾನು ಮಾರ್ನಿಂಗ್ ನ್ಯೂಸ್ ಗೆ    ಕಾಲಿರಿಸಿದೆ. ಹೆಗ್ಡೆಯವರು ನೀಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಅವಕಾಶ, ಮಾರ್ಗದರ್ಶನ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರೋತ್ಸಾಹ ನನ್ನ ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ಆತ್ಮವಿಶ್ವಾಸಗಳನ್ನು ಹೆಚ್ಚಿಸುವಲ್ಲಿ ಸಹಕಾರಿಯಾಯಿತು. ವರದಿಗಾರಿಕೆಯಿರಲಿ ಅಥವಾ ಗಣ್ಯವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗಳ ಸಂದರ್ಶನವಿರಲಿ, ಹಲವಾರು ಬಾರಿ ಹೆಗ್ಡೆಯವರು ನಮ್ಮ ಜತೆಗೂಡಿ ಮಾರ್ಗದರ್ಶನವೀಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಹಲವಾರು ಬಾರಿ ನಮ್ಮೊಂದಿಗೆ ತಾವೇ ಖುದ್ದು ಬರುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಸುದ್ದಿಯ ಎಳೆಯೇನಾದರೂ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿದರೆ ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಜತೆಗೂಡಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಬೆಳ್ಳಂಬೆಳಿಗ್ಗೆಯೇ ಹೊರಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ವರದಿಗಳನ್ನು ತಿದ್ದಿ-ತೀಡಿ ಅಚ್ಚುಕಟ್ಟಾಗಿಸುವಲ್ಲಿ ಸಹಕರಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಬೆಳಿಗ್ಗೆಯೇ ಕಛೇರಿಗೆ ಬಂದರೆ ಅಂದಿನ ಆವೃತ್ತಿ ಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗುವವರೆಗೂ, ಹೆಗ್ಡೆಯವರು ಕಣ್ಣಾಗಿ, ಕಿವಿಯಾಗಿ ಕುಳಿತಿರುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು, ಅನುಭವ ಹಾಗೂ ಜ್ಞಾನದ ಖನಿಯಾದ ಹೆಗ್ಡೆಯವರೇ ನಮ್ಮ ಅಂದಿನ ವಿಕಿಪೀಡಿಯ. ಕಾಯಕವೇ ಕೈಲಾಸ ಹೆಗ್ಡೆಯವರ ಮಂತ್ರವಾಗಿತ್ತು, ಅವರಿಗೆ ವೃತ್ತಿ  ಜೀವಕ್ಕಾಗಿಯಲ್ಲವೆಂದೆನೆಸುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ವೃತ್ತಿಯೇ ಅವರ ಜೀವನವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ವೃತ್ತಿ ನಿಷ್ಠೆಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ತುಡಿತ ಮೇಳೈಸಿದಾಗ ಮಾತ್ರ ಈ ಪರಿಯ ತಾದಾತ್ಮ್ಯತೆ ಸಾಧ್ಯ.

ಪತ್ರಿಕೋದ್ಯಮದ ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆ ಇಲ್ಲದವರೂ ಹೆಗ್ದೆಯವರ ಪ್ರೋತ್ಸಾಹದಿಂದಾಗಿ ಈ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ಬರುವಂತಾಗಿದೆ. ಉನ್ನತ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣವಷ್ಟೇ ಹೆಗ್ಡೆಯವರ ಆಯ್ಕೆಯ ಮಾನದಂಡವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಪತ್ರಿಕೋದ್ಯಮ ಪದವಿ ಅಪೇಕ್ಷಣೀಯವಾಗಿದ್ದರೂ ಕಡ್ಡಾಯವಾಗಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಕಲಿಯಬೇಕೆಂಬ ಕೆಚ್ಚು, ಹುಮ್ಮಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಅವರು ಅಭ್ಯರ್ಥಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಗುರುತಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಮಾರ್ನಿಂಗ್ ನ್ಯೂಸ್ ಮೂಲಕ ಹಲವಾರು ಮಂದಿ ಪತ್ರಿಕೋದ್ಯಮ ಕ್ಶೇತ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಹೆಗ್ದೆಯವರ ಗರಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪಳಗಿದವರೆಲ್ಲರೂ ಇಂದು ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಿತ ಪತ್ರಿಕೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿರಿಯ ಹುದ್ದೆಗಳನ್ನು ನಿರ್ವಹಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಯಾವುದೇ ವಿಷಯದ ಭದ್ರ ಬುನಾದಿಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಸಮರ್ಥ ಪತ್ರಕರ್ತರನ್ನು ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಸಬಹುದು ಎನ್ನುವ ಹೆಗ್ಡೆಯವರ ನಂಬಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಇವರು ಹುಸಿಯಾಗಿಸಿಲ್ಲ.

ಹೆಗ್ಡೆಯವರ ಪ್ರಭಾವಲಯಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದವರು ಖಂಡಿತಾ ಅವರ ಒಂದಿಲ್ಲೊಂದು ಗುಣಗಳನ್ನು ಮೆಚ್ಚುತ್ತಾರೆ ಮತ್ತು ಅಳವಡಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅವರೊಂದಿಗಿನ ಸಂಪರ್ಕ ದೀರ್ಘಾವಧಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದಿರಬಹುದು ಅಥವಾ ಅಲ್ಪಕಾಲದ್ದಾಗಿರಬಹುದು. ಆದರೆ ಅಪ್ಯಾಯಮಾನತೆ ಮತ್ತು ಆತ್ಮೀಯತೆ ಬದುಕಿಗಾಗುವಷ್ಟು.  ನಾವೆಲ್ಲಿದ್ದರೂ ಹೆಗ್ಡೆಯವರು ನಮ್ಮ ಹಿತಾಕಾಂಕ್ಷಿಗಳು ಎನ್ನುವ ನಂಬಿಕೆ ನಮಗಿದೆ. ನನ್ನ ವೃತ್ತಿಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆಗ್ಡೆಯವರಂತಹ ಸಾಧಕನ ಪರಿಚಯವಾದುದಕ್ಕೆ ನನಗೆ ಹೆಮ್ಮೆಯೆನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಅವರ ಸಹಧರ್ಮಿಣಿ ಶ್ರೀಮತಿ ವಸಂತಿ ಹೆಗ್ಡೆಯವರನ್ನು ನಾವು ಹಲವಾರು ಬಾರಿ ಭೇಟಿಯಾದದ್ದಿದೆ. ಹೆಗ್ದೆಯವರ ಸಾಧನೆಯ ಹಿಂದೆ ದೈವಭಕ್ತೆ, ಸರಳ ಸಜ್ಜನಿಕೆಯ ವಸಂತಿಯವರ ಪಾತ್ರ ಬಹಳ ಹಿರಿದು ಎಂದು ನನಗನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

ಇಳಿವಯಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಹೆಗ್ಡೆಯವರ ಕುಗ್ಗದ ಜೀವನೋತ್ಸಾಹ ಹಾಗೂ ಜೀವನ ಪ್ರೀತಿ ಅನುಕರಣೀಯ.  ನಿವೃತ್ತಿ ಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿನ ಪ್ರವೃತ್ತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಗಂಭೀರವಾಗಿ ಪರಿಗಣಿಸಿದ ಹೆಗ್ಡೆಯವರು, ಈ ಅವಧಿಯಲ್ಲೂ ಮಾಡಿದ ಸಾಧನೆಗಳು ಅಪಾರ. ಮನಸ್ಸಿದ್ದರೆ ಮಾರ್ಗಗಳು ತಾವಾಗಿ ತೆರೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತವೆ. ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದು ವಿಷಯವನ್ನು ಕೌತುಕದಿಂದಲೇ ಗಮನಿಸುವ ಹೆಗ್ಡೆಯವರ ಅನ್ವೇಷಣಾ ಮನೋಭಾವ  ಅವರನ್ನು ಇನ್ನೂ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಯಾಗಿಸಿದೆ. ಜೀವನ ಪಾಠಶಾಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕಲಿಯುತ್ತಾ, ಕಲಿಸುತ್ತಾ ಸಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ ಅವರ ಬಾಳ ಪಯಣ. ಬದುಕೆಂಬ ಜಟಕಾ ಬಂಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆಗ್ಡೆಯವರು ದಣಿವರಿಯದ ಸರದಾರ.

ಬಹುಶಃ ಪೊ. ಕೃಷ್ಣಾನಂದ ಹೆಗ್ಡೆಯವರಿಗೆ ಜೀವನದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಯಾವ ಆಕ್ಷೇಪವೂ ಇರಲಿಕ್ಕಿಲ್ಲ. ಕವಿ ಕೆ. ಎಸ್. ನರಸಿಂಹಸ್ವಾಮಿಯವರ ಕವನದ ಸಾಲು – ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನು ಕೊಟ್ಟಿರುವೆ ಏನ ಬೇಡಲಿ? ಜಗವನೆನಗೆ ಬಿಟ್ಟಿರುವೆ ಏಕೆ ಕಾಡಲಿ? – ಎಂಬುದು ಅವರ ಜೀವನ ದೃಷ್ಟಿ.
